To Davos, Mr. Eliot

To Davos, Mr. Eliot

by C. Jayant Praharaj

Let us go then to Davos, Mr.Eliot,

Through the byways of high-flown conversations,

Amongst certain loud nitwits

And some sputtering bigwigs,

When the halls reverberate with erudition,

And the oblivious earth continues its daily rotation.

I hear the suited speakers come and go

Talking of trade flow and cash flow.

When the distant cries of starving kids

And the farmers struggling to make ends meet

Have been sanitized for dinner conversations,

Let us go, let us go,

To where the heartless heads meet

In certain abstract unsentimental retreats.

I hear the suited speakers come and go

Talking of trade flow and cash flow.

Let us go then

To hear the neatness freaks,

They will make our lives ordered

And control our cattle fodder,

Let us go and hear

The minions of the autocrats roar.

I hear the suited speakers come and go

Talking of trade flow and cash flow.

Let us go hear the idle prattle

Of anointed experts,

Let us hear them press

For regimented progress,

As the decades go by

And the world goes more awry.

I hear the suited speakers come and go

Talking of trade flow and cash flow.
